Tom Daley and Michelle Keegan teamed up to present an award at the BAFTA TV Awards on Sunday evening. But viewers were left cringing as a joke shared by the pair fell flat.
The Brassic actress and Olympic gold medal-winning diver took to the stage at the star-studded ceremony held at the Royal Festival Hall in London. But unfortunately their banter about knitwear fell flat with viewers.
The awkward moment occurred when former Coronation Street actress Michelle, 34, expressed disappointment that Tom, who is known for his crochet skills, wasn’t dressed in a knitted outfit. Instead he was wearing a striking blue and yellow patterned white suit.
“I’m a little bit disappointed tonight, you’re not wearing one piece of knitting,” Michelle told Tom, 27. “I know you’re an Olympic champion but we love the knit,” she added.
And Tom asked her jokingly: “How do you know I’ve not got my knitted knickers on?” Michelle replied: “Ah there we go. So we now know.” Tom then offered: “I can teach you to make some yourself if you like.” And, fanning herself, Michelle told him: “Alright perfect.”
As the crowd fell quiet and they quickly pressed on by announcing the nominees. And the moment didn’t go unnoticed by viewers watching at home.
@nickoverheard tweeted: “An evening of lead balloons but none heavier than that Tom Daley and Michelle Keegan exchange.” @1starman2011 pointed out: “Oooh nobody laughed at Tom Daley’s joke to Michelle Keegan. Cringe. #BAFTA.” And @jamescunnington said: “Some of the presenting duos are really random!! Michelle Keegan and Tom Daley?!”
But an amused @ciarale01 said: “Laughing at Tom Daley and Michelle ‘knitted knickers’ joke!” @verkligtwilmon enthused: “TOM DALEY AND MICHELLE KEEGAN HELLO I LOVE U BOTH.” And @hazeyromanova complimented: “Wow Michelle Keegan and Tom Daley look SO GOOD.”
Last summer Tom won his first-ever Olympic gold medal and he was spotted knitting poolside in Tokyo. The diver shed tears on the podium after he and diving partner Matty Lee won gold medals in the synchronised 10m platform.
It was Tom’s fourth Olympic games after making his debut as a 14-year-old in Beijing before finishing third in the 10m platform in London in 2012 and synchronised 10m platform in Rio in 2016. Tom planned for his potential medal win by knitting his very own medal case.
He has been sharing his incredible talent on his dedicated website Made With Love By Tom Daley after he discovered he is a dab hand at it. Taking to social media following his incredible win Tom admitted that knitting and crocheting “has helped me so much through these Olympics.”
