Paul Hollywood has found himself in hot water with Great British Bake Off viewers over his latest comments.

He was back on-screen on Tuesday night alongside Prue Leith to cast an eye over the latest batch of baker’s biscuits.

It was biscuit week in the famous tent and the 11 remaining contestants were tasked with three new challenges.

First up was their own version of a classic brandy snap in the signature challenge, then it was time to perfect a jam and cream biscuit in the technical and produce an impressive interactive biscuit showstopper.

But it wasn’t a great week for Maggie.

The retired nurse and midwife was disappointed when her blackcurrant brandy snaps didn’t quite hit the mark – and were branded “pale and chewy”.

Then later, her beach-themed showstopper was branded “basic” – with the whole day leaving Maggie emotional.

But the biggest blow came when Paul told her: “If you were looking at a traditional school report, it would say ‘needs to try harder’.”

Maggie had a disappointing week in the tent

Maggie, 70, then said: “I would give anything to be here another week.

“It’s quite silly, really. When I’ve watched people on Bake Off cry, I’ve thought, ‘For goodness’s sake, it’s only cake.’

“Suddenly, it’s all changed.”

Luckily, Maggie was put safely through to week three. But that didn’t stop Bake Off viewers ‘raging’.

“Someone needs to have a word with Paul for disrespecting Maggie like that,” fumed one.

Another tweeted: “When Paul told Maggie she “needs to try harder” #gbbo.”

Paul’s comment enraged viewers

“Raging at Paul’s ‘must try harder’ comment to Maggie. The audacity. #GBBO,” a third added.

A fourth said: “Ah Maggie, Paul telling her if it was a school report it would read must try harder. Just wanted to tell him to leave her alone #GBBO.”

“No more bad comments to Maggie please Paul my heart can’t take her sad face #GBBO,” another pleaded.

But there was also a lot of love for Maggie.

“maggie reminds me so much of my nanny I literally love her so much #GBBO,” one viewer shared.

Another tweeted: “Maggie is a national treasure and must be protected at all costs #GBBO.”

“Seeing Maggie cry is heartbreaking. You’re right babe it is only cake #GBBO,” a third added.
