Coronation Street’s Julia Goulding had a sweet response to her co-star picking up an award.

The Shona Platt actress was full of praise for soap icon David Neilson, or Roy Cropper to many a viewer.

The 72-year-old, who has starred in the ITV soap for 26 years, was awarded the Best Soap Actor gong at the TV Choice Awards on Monday night.

He was up against fellow Corrie star Chris Gascoyne, known for playing Peter Barlow, as well as EastEnder’s Mick Carter actor Danny Dyer and Bradley Johnson who plays Vinny Dingle in Emmerdale.

David’s acceptance speech saw him in Roy’s cafe unwrapping the award.

“Here we are at Coronation Street and this is the Best Actor award from TV Choice,” he said as he took the wrapping away to show off the shiny gong.

“This is very exciting,” David added as he battled with the paper.

“Look at that, eh. Well, David Neilson, Coronation Street. That’s me,” he said while adorning his award.

He then joked about keeping the award on the cafe’s counter to as an “encouragement to other actors when they come in to try harder,” before thanking everyone for their votes.

Julia was among the first Corrie star to tweet, writing: “He really is the best! It’s a laugh a minute in that cafe, I tell ya! Congratulations.”

Summer Spellman actress Harriet Bibby added: “What a joy.”

Fans were also thrilled.

“Roy is just the dad that we all want! National treasure and I love him!! #corrie! Truly deserved award #TVChoiceAwards,” tweeted one.
