Gavin and Stacey’s Rob Brydon finally addresses Uncle Bryn’s sexuality

Gavin and Stacey star Rob Brydon has addressed his character’s sexuality after years of theories from fans.

It’s been two years since we last caught up with the Shipman-West clan in that much-anticipated Christmas special.

Before then, a decade had passed without knowing when had happened to the Essex and Barry-based families.

But there is still one particular question that fans are still asking all these years on – what happened on Uncle Bryn’s fishing trip with nephew Jason?

As regular viewers of the series, which ran from 2007 to 2010, will know, there’s a long-running joke that appears to suggest Bryn and Jason have a secret surrounding a fishing trip that only they and Dave ‘Coaches’ Gooch know about.

James Cordon told The Times in an interview in 2019 that they’ll “never” explain what happened on that fishing trip.

But Rob, who has played Uncle Bryn since the very start of the hit sitcom 14 years ago, may have answered another question.

Asked if the character is gay on Jessie Ware’s Table Manners podcast, Rob said: “There’s a part of me that doesn’t want to say anything because I think it should be in the mind of the audience.

“Obviously they have written it… but it’s not ambiguous is it. I’d be surprised if he wasn’t.

“I wonder if he’s just never acted on it. They’ve never said to me… it’s just what’s there in the script.”

The actor added: “But, you know, the way he gazes at Larry Lamb, who plays Mick…”

Writers and stars of the show James and Ruth Jones, reunited after 10 years for the hour-long Christmas special on the BBC at the end of 2019.

And after ending on that cliffhanger, fans are always wondering if they’ll ever find out what happened next.
