ITV This Morning viewers distracted as England star Mason Mount sits down for first TV interview

This Morning viewers were left divided and distracted as Mason Mount made a live appearance on the show. The footballer headed to chat to Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield on the ITV daytime show fresh from England’s defeat against Hungary.

The Three Lions suffered a 4-0 loss during their latest Nation’s League game in Wolverhampton leaving them rock-bottom of Group A3. And fans have since turned on Gareth Southgate and his players just five months ahead of the World Cup.

Mason went to the London ITV studio to chat to Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield about his involvement with the charity Together For Short Lives. However, they couldn’t not mention the action on the pitch as well as off it.

“We never like to begin the interview on a downer but sadly this one is a little bit unavoidable,” Holly, 41, said as the Chelsea star sat opposite her on the famous sofa. “You guys did lose last night and recently things haven’t been quite as going to plan have they?”

Mason then replied: “It was a difficult four games, these things happen. If you put it into perspective over the last couple of years, we got into a semi in the World Cup and then a Euros final, so this is just the start, these things happen.” He added: “It’s a little bump in the road, but now we are obviously fully focused on the World Cup coming up.”

Phillip slightly laughed as he reminded Mason it is the worst home defeat for England since 1928, but asked what was discussed when they walked off the pitch. “As players, you are obviously disappointed with the performance,” Mason replied. “But at that time the most important thing is to stay together, stay strong and stay as a team…we know within the team what we can do, so it’s about working hard now.”

Holly suggest that the ‘only was is up’ before Mason later added: “We want to make the nation proud and continue moving forward.” Moving on to his involvement with a charity close to his heart, Mason explained: “My brother introduced me to Together For Short Lives and as soon as I knew what they were about and what they were doing, it was obviously a massive passion to be involved and do anything I can to really help raise awareness.

“I became a patron on my 21st birthday and it’s been over a year now that I’ve been involved and seeing everything that goes on behind the scenes and working closely with the charity.”

But some This Morning viewers were divided over this first proper appearance on the ITV daytime show. @allen_rob commented: “First and last time. Very awkward chap. Staring off into the studio #thismorning.” @JayHBaker94 said: “Mason during the interview. States(sic) down the camera every five seconds #ThisMorning.”

But @jennielouu said: “Ah Mason Mount is lovely #thismorning.” @kouganray commented: “Seems like a good lad that Mason #ThisMorning.” @cfcAds shared: “Just saw @masonmount_10 on ITV discussing a charity he’s involved in. What a polite and grounded young man he is. He’s also a very good player. The stick he gets for some performances on Twitter I feel are unfair.Give him time, he’s still very young.”

Others, however, were distracted by his outfit as he donned a blue and white top with a pair of beige trousers. @Mabel_Mouse_ tweeted: “My kids PE top was exactly the same as what Mason Mount is wearing #ThisMorning.” @lvad78 said: “Mason mount on #ThisMorning looking like a 90s geography teacher.”
