ITV This Morning viewers ‘very surprised’ amid confusion over Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield’s return

This Morning fans were flocking to social media to say they were ‘very surprised’ as the show returned to screens. Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield were back at the helm of the ITV daytime show on Wednesday (December 28) after the programme took a break over Christmas.

The hosting duo did appear on the programme on Sunday for a Christmas Day special which featured festive favourites such as Sir Cliff Richard and The Muppets. The special was recorded before Holly, 41, and Phillip, 60, said their goodbyes for the year to viewers earlier this month and were replaced by Alison Hammond, Dermot O’Leary, Jose Gibson, Craig Doyle and Andi Peters.

So it’s fair to say that some This Morning viewers were confused to see the pair back on screen today. @BeddoesJill tweeted: “Very surprised to see Holly and Phil back so soon after Christmas! They are not usually back until new year #thismorning.”

@Boab10s echoed: “Very surprised to see Phil and Holly back, thought would be off until January. #ThisMorning.” @RodrickSanchez0 said: “Oh no Phil and Holly are back on already! I’ll watch but I expected like @RuthieeL or @josiegibson why are they back so soon?” @I_knew_Bob added: “What’s up with these two? Normally back after the New Year #thismorning.”

But despite Holly and Phillip opening the show as if it were live, other were quickly aware it had been pre-recorded. @missohlola said: “Lol why are they are patronising us by pretending the shows this week are live ‘oh i’ve got leftovers’ the shows were recorded when they were off air for the World Cup #ThisMorning.”

The duo appeared back in the ITV show’s studio as normal

@BigHitsTV1 commented: “This ain’t live #ThisMorning.” Addressing another tweeter, @missohlola replied: “Pre recorded during the world Cup when everyone was off air.” @BeddoesJill also added: “Today’s programme was recorded on 22 November. Check out Holly’s Instagram. #thismorning.”

And they would be right. Last month, This Morning spent days off air during the start of the World Cup 2022 and each day, Holly still kept to her tradition of taking to Instagram to show off her looks and let her millions of followers were her outfits are from ahead of appearing on the show.

Alongside one of the posts, where she was seen donning the same black mini dress with lace detailing as on today’s edition of the show, the mum-of-three wrote: “Good morning… @thismorning is not on your screens today but we are filming some festive fun for a later show!”
