Singing star Jermain Jackman had a bit of a shock on his visit to Manchester this week – when he found what he said looked like a ‘lizard’ at his hotel.
Jermain, who won hit TV talent show The Voice in 2014, took to Twitter to reveal the unusual discovery with followers on Tuesday morning (October 19).
The singer, author and activist was in town as a keynote speaker at the social enterprise Salford CVS conference at the AJ Bell Stadium, and stayed over at the Premier Inn at Trafford Centre West.
But he was to have something of a surprise when he was leaving the hotel.
He tweeted to fans: “Eventful morning so far as I found a lizard just chilling in my hotel in Manchester – I didn’t even know what to do,” followed by the crying emoji.
One fan helpfully suggested: “Go straight to reception”.
To which Jermain replied: “I did and they removed it.
“Should have taken a pic tbh.”
Asked by the Manchester Evening News for further detail about the incident, Jermain said staff were just as surprised as he was at seeing the living creature in the lobby.
He said: “I initially thought it was a leaf but realised it had hands and fingers and I was like… WAIT, that’s a lizard!
“They had no idea how it got there, and as I was leaving left them to it to remove it.
“I should have taken a picture.”
When the M.E.N. contacted the hotel about the incident, staff said they believed it was a newt, not a lizard, that had been found.
They have confirmed that it was found in reception at the venue, and that it was swiftly and carefully removed after staff were alerted.
While newts look to all intents and purposes like a lizard, they actually belong to the amphibian family and are fairly common in the UK in grassy woodland areas and near ponds and wetlands.
Many species of newt are protected under law in the UK and cannot be destroyed, captured, sold or injured.
The hotel is based on Trafford Quays, directly opposite the Trafford Centre shopping malls and entertainment complex, and is popular with business travellers as it is so close to the M60.
A spokesperson for Premier Inn said: “Over the years we’ve had a number of creatures try their hand at checking into Premier Inn, enticed by the prospect of a great night’s sleep or our famous breakfast.
“The team at Manchester Trafford Centre West were certainly surprised to spot this little creature, believed to be a newt.
“He certainly raised a smile before being carefully released to outside.
“Who knows with the hotel being just a stone’s throw from Old Trafford as well as the Trafford Centre, perhaps he’s a football fan.
“We’ve nicknamed him ‘Newton Heath’ in tribute to the original name of the club.”
Jermain, 25, became the first male to win The Voice in the UK in its third series in 2014, when the programme was then broadcast on the BBC.
He was mentored by American superstar Will.i.am in the contest, and won huge acclaim for his stirring performances, including his version of Jennifer Holliday’s And I’m Telling You I’m not Going.
He released his debut album in 2015, and in more recent times has been using his voice to get involved in political activism with the Labour Party.
The Voice has continued to be a successful talent show now on its new home on ITV.
Will.i.am remains a mentor on the show, which has just returned to filming at Salford’s MediaCityUK this month.
