Until Dawn 2 follows a group of ghost-hunting influencers who stage their content. After signing up with a TV network, the crew travel to an abandoned tropical island to film the first episode of their new series. However, they soon discover that this time the threat is real, and the decisions they make will be the difference between life and death.

While the original 2015 game was developed by Supermassive Games, its sequel will be made by Firesprite Games. This studio has primarily focused on VR games in the past, releasing sci-fi horror The Persistence and co-developing Horizon: Call of the Mountain.

"Part of our mission from day one has been honoring that core DNA [of the original Until Dawn]: character drama, tough choices, and those unforgettable horror moments that made the first game so special," Firesprite Games' creative director Stu Tilley wrote in a PlayStation Blog post.

Like Until Dawn, the game won't just feature choices such as which way to go when fleeing danger. Players will also need to handle interpersonal relationships, with their decisions having equally serious consequences. Tilley states that managing relationships between the group will be a significant element of the game, with some gameplay paths branching off based upon where they stand with each other.

"It’s not just the huge moments, even small character moments can set off a Butterfly Effect," wrote Tilly. The Butterfly Effect is a gameplay mechanic within the first Until Dawn game, where the player must make decisions that will significantly impact the story later on.

Though Until Dawn 2 is a standalone title requiring no knowledge of the previous game, it will feature at least one returning character. Peter Stormare returns as Dr. Hill aka The Analyst, a psychiatrist whose sessions punctuated Until Dawn.

No other cast members have been officially announced. However, considering that Until Dawn 2 appears to be following its predecessor by using its voice actors' likenesses, fans have quickly started deducing who might appear. These include Baldur's Gate 3's Neil Newbon, The White Lotus' Sarah Catherine Hook, and Stranger Things' Dacre Montgomery.
