Avatar: Seven Havens first trailer teases grimmer Avatar universe

Avatar: Seven Havens has released its first trailer, the new animated series offering a glimpse of the world Aang and Korra left behind. Unfortunately, it looks like the four nations aren't living together in harmony any more. In fact, they might not even exist.

From Avatar: The Last Airbender creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, Avatar: Seven Havens follows Pavi, a young earthbender who's forced to go on the run when she learns that she is the next Avatar. It seems as though the Avatar is no longer seen as a saviour, but a danger to humanity. Thankfully, Pavi has allies in her airbender friend and mentor Jae, as well as her long-lost twin sister. She'll also have her own animal companion as is Avatar tradition: a giant cat-monkey named Geet.

It isn't clear exactly why attitudes toward the Avatar have changed since Aang and Korra held the position. However, we do know that the world was devastated by an unspecified calamity some time after The Legend of Korra — and it seems as though there is a non-zero chance that Avatar Korra was somehow involved. Despite the series looking as though it could be set hundreds of years after The Legend of Korra, Paramount has said that Pavi is the next Avatar after Korra.

Either something caused the Avatar Cycle to be put on hold for a long time, or that calamity changed the world in some unexpected ways.

Avatar: Seven Havens arrives Oct. 9 on Paramount+.
