Knife-wielding woman accused of stabbing 2 in Times Square before being shot by police

A knife-wielding woman stabbed two people in the heart of Times Square Monday afternoon before advancing on NYPD officers with two knives and being shot by police, authorities said.

The violence erupted just before 4:30 p.m. near West 43rd Street and Seventh Avenue, where the woman, described by authorities as emotionally disturbed, stabbed a man and a woman, police confirmed to Fox 5 New York.

The armed woman then fled north toward an NYPD substation, where officers confronted her as she wielded two knives, according to police.

Officers first deployed a Taser in an attempt to stop the woman, but she continued advancing toward them while armed, prompting officers to open fire and strike her, police said.

The two stabbing victims and the female suspect were hospitalized following the attack. Authorities said the victims and suspect were transported to hospitals, but their conditions were not immediately clear.

Police urged the public to avoid West 43rd Street and Seventh Avenue and warned of delays in the surrounding area as investigators descended on the scene.

Authorities said the incident does not appear to be terror-related.

It was not immediately clear whether any NYPD officers were injured during the incident.

Police are expected to hold a news conference later on Monday.
