Dating over 40 doesn’t mean you need an app with “senior” in the name or a profile that reads like a marriage application. Maybe you’re dating after divorce, fitting first dates around a custody schedule, or ready to meet someone new after time on your own. You might want a long-term relationship, a casual connection, or a reason to put on something other than your work-from-home pants. You don’t have to be looking for the same thing as everyone else, but it helps to know which apps suit what you want.

Match is worth comparing if you prefer more detailed profiles, while Tinder is an option for exploring something casual. But the best choice also depends on who’s using it near you, what you can do for free, and whether the experience makes you want to meet someone or throw your phone into the sea.
There’s reason to be hopeful without pretending the apps are magic. In a 2026 SSRS survey, half of U.S. adults who had ever used a dating site or app said they’d been in a committed relationship with someone they met through one. The goal, of course, is to spend less time evaluating profiles and more time figuring out whether you enjoy someone’s company.

I’ve spent years testing dating apps for Mashable, including their free versions and paid upgrades. For this guide, I’m focusing on the differences that matter: profile features that let you show off your personality, useful preferences, messaging access, and privacy controls.
